Talpe or Unawatuna?

The short answer: they are 1.5 kilometres apart — about two minutes by tuk-tuk, or a twenty-minute walk along the sand. This is not the either/or decision it looks like from a map. Stay on the quiet stretch and Unawatuna's restaurants and dive shops are a few minutes away whenever you want them.

If you want to be in the activity — bars a short stumble from bed, a beach with beds and umbrellas for hire, somewhere to eat every fifty metres — stay in Unawatuna. If you want to fall asleep to the sea rather than to a bar, and travel two minutes when you want dinner and a crowd, stay on the Talpe and Dalawella stretch, which is where EKA Beach is.

Unawatuna

The developed one, and the most established beach on this part of the coast. A crescent bay, sheltered enough to swim on most days, lined end to end with restaurants, guesthouses, dive schools and bars. If you want company, English menus and somewhere open late, this is where it is.

The trade is exactly what you would expect. It is busy, it is commercial, and in high season the beach is worked hard — loungers, touts, music from several directions at once. People who love Unawatuna love it for the life; people who dislike it dislike it for the same reason.

Dalawella

The next bay along, and the beach EKA sits on. Quieter than Unawatuna and less built up, with a reef that keeps parts of it calm. It has become known for two things: the palm-tree rope swing that appears in a great many photographs — expect a small charge and a queue — and turtles, which feed close to shore here and are seen regularly.

It is not undiscovered. Saturdays draw both visitors and Sri Lankan families, and the swing has its own small crowd most afternoons. But it empties in the evening in a way Unawatuna does not.

Talpe

Quieter again, and more residential — villas, a few small hotels, less of a strip and more of a stretch of coast people live on. The postal address here is Dalawella; Talpe is the name most guests search for, and the two describe the same few kilometres of sand. Cafés and small restaurants are within reach, but you will not find a nightlife scene, because there isn't one.

Most people are choosing between quiet with easy access to noise and noise with a walk to quiet. The distance is small enough that either works; what differs is what you wake up to and what you fall asleep to.

EKA Beach sits on the quiet side of that line — four rooms on the sand at Dalawella, with Unawatuna two minutes away and Galle Fort ten. Breakfast is included and made to order, every room has its own en-suite bathroom and air conditioning, and check-in is self-service, so a late arrival is never a problem.
