When to Come
The short answer: December to March is the driest stretch and the busiest. But the more useful thing to know is that the temperature here barely moves all year — daytime highs sit between 28°C and 30°C every single month. You are not choosing between warm and cold. You are choosing between wetter and drier, and between busier and quieter.

What the numbers don't tell you
A wet day is not a washout. Even in the driest month it rains on more than half the days here. Tropical rain usually arrives hard and leaves quickly — an hour in the afternoon, then sun. Seventeen wet days in January does not mean seventeen ruined ones, and the monthly totals matter far more than the day counts.
The wettest month is November, not July. The usual advice — "avoid the south coast from May to September" — is roughly right about the southwest monsoon but misses that October and November are wetter still. Two peaks show up in the record: a sharp one in May, and a longer, heavier one through October and November.
June to August is not the washout its reputation suggests. Those months average less rain than October or November, and less than May. If you are travelling in the northern summer and have been told to go elsewhere in Sri Lanka, the data does not entirely support it.
Rain does not mean cold. The gap between the warmest and coolest month is about two degrees. There is no season here where you need more than you would pack for a warm day.
Choosing your window
December to March — the dry, busy season. Least rain, calmest sea, and the months most people mean by "the season" on the south coast. Also the busiest and the most expensive, and the stretch when Dalawella's rope swing has a queue. Book further ahead.
April — the shoulder. Rain climbs sharply but it is still warm and the crowds are thinning. Often good value.
May — the wettest of the first half. The southwest monsoon arrives. If you are set on a beach holiday, this is the month the data argues hardest against.
June to September — quieter, greener, cheaper. Wetter than winter but not dramatically so, and far quieter. The sea is rougher with the monsoon swell, so swimming depends more on the day. Good for people who would rather have the beach to themselves than a guaranteed forecast.
October and November — the wettest stretch. The second inter-monsoon. The heaviest rain in the record falls here.
Things that move with the calendar
Turtles. Nesting on this beach peaks between November and April, with hatchlings from late February through June. Turtles feed in the shallows year-round. More on that →
Whale watching from Mirissa. Boats run principally in the drier months, roughly November to April. Mirissa is twenty-nine minutes away, so it is a day trip rather than a reason to stay elsewhere.
Galle Fort. Ten minutes away and worth a day in any month — the ramparts and shaded streets are a good use of an afternoon when rain is about. Galle hosts a literary festival and international cricket at the stadium inside the fort; both are worth checking dates for if either appeals.
